Q&A with Martha J. Nieto: The Heart Behind The Lulo Project

Q: Who is Martha J. Nieto?
A: Hi! I’m Martha, the founder of The Lulo Project. I was born in Colombia, but after living in South America, North America, and Europe (and traveling everywhere in between), I like to think of myself as a citizen of the world. I’ve spent over 15 years working in fashion with incredible brands like Valentino, Roberto Cavalli, and Trussardi—basically living my dream while surrounded by beautiful things. Oh, and I also love teaching, so I’ve worked with some amazing fashion schools like Parsons and Accademia Costume & Moda.

Q: What inspired you to create The Lulo Project?
A: It all started with a fruit—yes, really! About five years ago, while living in Italy, I stumbled across Lulo at a tiny street market. Lulo is this citrus fruit from Colombia that’s full of flavor, color, and memories for me. Seeing it took me right back to my hometown, my family, and all the laughter and joy that shaped who I am. I couldn’t stop smiling!

I wanted to bring that feeling of joy and connection to other people, even if they’re in big cities or far from “home.” And voilà—The Lulo Project was born.

Q: What’s the story behind the name?
A: It’s named after that same magical fruit, Lulo. It’s refreshing, colorful, and a little bold—just like the brand. The Lulo Project is all about creating pieces that make people feel special and bring a smile to their faces.

Q: What makes The Lulo Project different?
A: It’s not just a fashion brand—it’s personal. Everything we do is inspired by my Afro-Colombian roots, the beauty of nature, and a little dash of wanderlust. We’re about laidback elegance: comfy-chic pieces that work wherever life takes you. Think bold prints, vibrant colors, and a whole lot of personality.

Q: What’s your ultimate goal with The Lulo Project?
A: Honestly, it’s simple: I want to bring joy, boldness, and a little bit of “home” to people’s lives. Whether you’re dressing up for a big moment or just lounging around, I hope our pieces make you feel confident, comfy, and ready to take on the world.
